Christopher Columbus landed in the Canary Islands, where the Arawak and Taino Indians lived. They invited him and his men kindly into their land. Columbus then took over their land and claimed it was Spain's territory. Columbus and his crew tortured the Indians brutally by hanging them and slaughtering them.
